CY STATION // SIGNAL GUIDE

Why 480i?

A 480i patch is the game-side link in a better picture chain: it gives the game a denser interlaced signal. From there, Analogue3D can optionally change how that image is delivered and scaled before it reaches your display.

ONE SIGNAL, FOUR DISTINCT STAGES

Start in the game. Finish at the screen.

First, the patch changes the game. Many N64 titles spend most of their time in 240p: one 240-line picture at a time. A 480i-patched ROM instead uses the console's 480-line mode, sending odd and even lines as two fast fields.

Then the display path can change the delivery. On original hardware, that 480i signal can go straight to a CRT or scaler. On Analogue3D, Progressive Output and Horizontal Upscaling are optional, separate stages—not substitutes for the patch itself.

  1. Stage 01 Game-side

    480i-patched ROM

Creates the denser, interlaced picture at the source.

  2. Stage 02 Optional · Analogue3D

    Progressive Output

Optional Beta mode: delivers the full source image every frame.

  3. Stage 03 Optional · Analogue3D

    Horizontal Upscaling

Doubles 3D horizontal detail while 2D stays native.

  4. Stage 04 Display-side

    Your display

Choose the CRT, scaler, or 4K mode that suits the game.

The patch is the game-side link. Analogue3D's options are display-side links; compare them per game instead of treating the chain as a universal multiplier. Games that use field-rendered screens may still need individual testing.

WHAT CHANGES ON SCREEN

The useful bits, without the jargon

Finer vertical detail

A 480-line image gives a compatible game more room for details that stack upward: type, thin edges, distant scenery, and busy menus can read with more definition.

Still an N64 signal

This stays in the console's standard-definition world. On a CRT or a good scaler, it is a native kind of output—not a fake filter laid over the game.

Tuned per game

There is no magic switch that improves every N64 title. Each patch is its own bit of preservation work, built around the way that specific game draws its picture.
